Georgia Tech inaugurates Thomas A. Fanning Student‑Athlete Performance Center at Bobby Dodd Stadium

The 108,000‑square‑foot expansion blends historic preservation with cutting‑edge sports science, supported by a $500 million ‘Full Steam Ahead’ campaign.

A modern hub rises at Bobby Dodd

Georgia Tech has added a 108,000‑square‑foot expansion to its historic Bobby Dodd Stadium, known as the Thomas A. Fanning Student‑Athlete Performance Center. The new facility, part of the university’s $500 million ‘Full Steam Ahead’ initiative, is intended to modernize the century‑old venue while giving athletes access to state‑of‑the‑art performance resources.

Inside the center are Georgia Tech’s first dedicated sports science laboratory, expansive strength‑and‑conditioning areas, and spaces for sports medicine, nutrition and recovery. A massive videoboard now crowns the south end, while new clubs, a speakeasy and a collection of deluxe suites enhance the fan experience.

The project was conceived by The S/L/A/M Collaborative and built by DPR Construction, both Atlanta‑based firms. In a nod to sustainability, salvaged steel from the stadium’s demolished upper deck was incorporated into the new structure, reducing waste and preserving a piece of the stadium’s history.

The building bears the name of Dr. Thomas A. Fanning, a Georgia Tech alumnus who has been a leading figure in the energy sector. His support reflects a broader vision of blending tradition with innovation across the campus’s athletic facilities.

A new era for Tech athletics

With the Fanning Center now open, Georgia Tech signals a commitment to providing its student‑athletes with resources that match the ambitions of a modern collegiate program, while honoring the legacy of Bobby Dodd Stadium. The expansion is only the first phase of a larger effort that will soon see upgrades to the Ramblin’ Wreck football fan experience, as well as improvements to basketball and volleyball venues.
