A decisive showdown at Southern Bank Stadium
On August 4, the Wilson City Little League All‑Stars faced elimination in the Southeast Region Ages 8‑10 Tournament after a 12‑3 loss to Georgia’s American Little League of Columbus at Southern Bank Stadium. The game, played before a modest crowd, began with a flurry of early runs that put Wilson on the back foot.
American capitalized on Wilson’s miscues, scoring four runs in the first inning after a triple by a Georgia batter exposed the team’s shaky defense. The early onslaught set the tone for a match that would see the Georgia side extend its lead across multiple innings.
Georgia’s pitcher Carlos Santiago delivered a solid outing, tossing all six innings while allowing just one earned run on five hits and striking out five batters. His performance kept Wilson’s offense limited despite the occasional spark.
Wilson managed to plate a single run in the second inning when Will Clark singled in Preston Staton, who had reached base on an outfield error. That run would prove to be the only score for the North Carolina runners-up, who finished with just one RBI.
American’s offense surged ahead with runs in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth frames, building a comfortable cushion. The team finished with 11 hits, overwhelming Wilson’s pitching and defensive efforts.
The victory secured a spot for American in the single‑elimination bracket and set up a championship showdown between North Carolina’s Greenville Tar Heel and South Carolina’s Northwood Little League of Taylors. Should the Tar Heels win, Wilson City could meet them for a third time in the tournament, a rematch that looms as a key narrative for the event.
