A New Chapter in Colorado
Georgii Merkulov, a 25‑year‑old Russian forward, has signed a one‑year deal with the Colorado Avalanche, ending his five‑year tenure with the Boston Bruins.
Merkulov spent two seasons in the USHL and a year at Ohio State before cracking the Providence Bruins lineup, where he quickly became a well‑rounded player known for his offensive output and defensive responsibility.
In his first full AHL season he recorded 55 points, and the following year he improved to 65, establishing himself among the league’s top contributors.
Initially questioned for his size, he proved his physicality and defensive acumen, eventually being recognized as one of the Bruins’ best defensive forwards at the AHL level by the 2025‑26 season.
The Bruins, focusing on younger prospects, decided not to renew his contract, opting to reshape their AHL roster and replace the entire top line and starting goaltender.
Colorado Avalanche officials view Merkulov as a valuable addition not only for the NHL squad but also for the Colorado Eagles, where he is expected to mentor prospects and contribute offensively.
His experience and skill set position him as a key player for the Eagles, offering a blend of veteran presence and dynamic play that the organization hopes will accelerate the development of its next generation.
