A New Chapter for Girls in Baseball
Nearly one hundred girls from the United States and three foreign nations converged in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, for the 2026 Maria Pepe Little League Baseball Legacy Series, a weekend that blended competition with camaraderie.
The tournament was overseen entirely by women, from the coaches who guided each squad to the umpires who called the strikes, underscoring a deliberate effort to showcase female leadership in a sport long dominated by men.
Competitors took part in the MLB Pitch, Hit & Run challenge, a first for an all‑girls field that marks fifty years of the event’s history, and Ariana Rodriguez emerged as the champion, earning a spot in the upcoming Team Championship.
The highlight of the gathering was the personal encounter with Maria Pepe, the trailblazer whose 1970s fight for girls’ inclusion paved the way for today’s participants; Pepe, recently inducted into the Little League Hall of Excellence, shared her story with the young athletes.
Organizers credited Little League’s official sponsors — including adidas, DICK’S Sporting Goods, Gatorade, New Era and Easton — for supplying uniforms, equipment and refreshments, ensuring that the focus remained on the players’ development.
Beyond the games, the weekend offered workshops, mentorship sessions and a group photo that captured the spirit of unity, a visual promise that the next generation of female ballplayers will continue to break barriers.
