Girls’ Flag Football League in Cedar Rapids Empowers Young Athletes

Coach Courtney Pennel's inclusive program welcomes players of all skill levels, fostering joy and skill development.

A Season of Firsts

A new flag football league in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is giving girls from second through seventh grade their first organized experience with the sport. The program, coordinated by Rec United in partnership with local schools, opens its doors to beginners and seasoned players alike, emphasizing participation over competition.

Coach Courtney Pennel, who has guided teams at recreational, high school and college levels, says the league’s core mission is to let every girl discover the simple joy of moving with a ball. "I love seeing a kid who never thought she could throw a spiral find a moment of confidence on the field," Pennel explains.

For many participants, the league is a family tradition. Aviana Schuler, a third‑grader, joined because her household already follows the Vikings and the Hawkeyes, and she wanted to experience the game herself. Her enthusiasm reflects a growing cultural shift that encourages girls to step onto the gridiron alongside their brothers and friends.

Emersyn Riley, a fourth‑grader, describes the league as "for everyone, not just boys." She has already learned to throw a perfect spiral and run precise routes, skills that have boosted her confidence and physical literacy. "I love the challenge of catching the ball and figuring out new plays," she says, highlighting the sport’s blend of strategy and athleticism.

The curriculum is deliberately progressive. Basic throwing and catching drills give way to more complex route concepts as players gain comfort. Pennel notes that the focus remains on teaching fundamentals while keeping the atmosphere fun and inclusive, ensuring that no participant feels pressured to win.

Beyond skill development, the league provides a community hub where girls from Cedar Rapids, Marion, Hiawatha and Center Point can connect. The program’s reach extends across these neighboring towns, creating a regional network that celebrates diversity in sport.

Registration is now open for the NFL Iowa Females in Flag middle school and high school summer league, offering an extended season for older participants. Interested families can sign up through Rec United’s website, which also lists details about practice locations and coaching staff.

The partnership with Cornell College adds an academic dimension, providing access to collegiate facilities and mentorship opportunities. This collaboration underscores the league’s commitment to holistic development, blending athletic growth with educational support.
