The Glen Cove Junior Soccer League has turned its love of the sport into a seasonal tradition of FIFA World Cup watch parties, blending live broadcasts with a host of community activities.
Uniting Families Through the Beautiful Game
In partnership with the city’s Department of Parks and Recreation and the Long Island Motion Picture Arts Center and Museum, the league has created events that go beyond soccer, offering food, raffles, music and activities designed for families of all ages.
The series culminates on July 19, when the championship match will be projected onto a large screen in Village Square, turning the heart of the town into a gathering place for supporters.
Brett Newman, the league’s second vice president, says the initiative is a way to give back to a community that has nurtured the sport for decades.
Newman notes that the league serves between 700 and 800 players each season, with roughly a quarter competing on travel teams that include children as young as three and teenagers approaching adulthood.
James M. Greenberg, the league’s president, praised Newman’s vision, saying the watch parties provide a unique opportunity for families to share the excitement of the world’s biggest tournament.
Spiro Tsirkas, director of Parks and Recreation, added that broadcasting a live sporting event is a novel experience for the city, and the collaboration has allowed the department to bring a new kind of public programming to Glen Cove.
The final event promises not only a celebration of soccer but also a chance for residents from different backgrounds to connect, reinforcing the sense of community that has long been built around youth soccer.
