Gonzaga Baseball Reigns at WCC Awards
Gonzaga University's baseball program added another chapter to its storied history this week, as the West Coast Conference unveiled a sweep of its major awards. The Bulldogs captured every top honor, taking home Coach of the Year, Player of the Year, Pitcher of the Year and Freshman of the Year in a single, decisive celebration of excellence.
At the center of the recognition is veteran skipper Mark Machtolf, who added a sixth Coach of the Year award to his résumé. Under his guidance the team compiled a 22‑5 record in conference play and secured a seventh straight regular‑season WCC title, underscoring his sustained impact on the program.
Mikey Bell, the offensive catalyst, repeated as Player of the Year after posting a .430 average in WCC games and a .396 mark overall. His consistent hitting helped anchor a lineup that proved difficult to contain throughout the season.
On the mound, Karsten Sweum earned Pitcher of the Year after striking out 108 batters and maintaining a 2.62 earned‑run average in conference action. His ability to dominate hitters was a key factor in the Bulldogs' pitching staff ranking among the nation's best.
Freshman right‑hander Landon Hood was rewarded with Freshman of the Year after delivering four saves and fanning 35 opponents. His emergence added depth to a bullpen that proved reliable in tight contests.
A Legacy of Leadership
The accolades reflect not only individual brilliance but also a culture of excellence fostered by Machtolf and his staff, a culture that continues to attract top talent and compete at the highest level of collegiate baseball.
