Gonzaga University is set to reinforce its frontcourt this season with the addition of former Florida State forward Chauncey Wiggins, a move that underscores the Bulldogs’ intent to return to the upper echelon of college basketball.
A Sharpshooter with Versatility
Wiggins, who spent three seasons at Clemson before a single year at Florida State, brings a rare combination of size and shooting touch. At 6‑foot‑10 he averaged 13.3 points and 3.9 rebounds last season while hitting nearly 39 percent from beyond the arc, ranking 13th in the ACC and topping all players 6‑9 or taller in made threes.
His shooting range stretches the defense, forcing opponents to choose between contesting his perimeter threat or leaving open looks for teammates such as Massamba Diop and Javon Bennett. That spacing not only creates more room for the interior game but also opens driving lanes for guards like Luca Foster and Sam Funches.
Depth and Experience Across the Roster
The Bulldogs have also welcomed transfers Isiah Harwell and Carter Nilson, while freshmen Juwan Ekanga‑Ehawa, Carter Nilson and Izan Almansa add further depth. Each newcomer contributes a distinct skill set, from defensive versatility to rebounding, building a roster that blends youthful energy with seasoned polish.
Coach Mark Few, who has guided Gonzaga for more than two decades, noted that the team’s three‑point shooting was the worst of his tenure last year. Wiggins’ arrival is viewed as a direct response to that shortfall, offering a proven scorer who can also operate at the four‑spot.
With the new pieces in place, the Bulldogs hope to translate their enhanced frontcourt versatility into a competitive edge as they prepare for the upcoming schedule.
