When the Washington State Football Coaches Association rolls out its hall of fame ceremony this spring, one name will stand out among the inductees: Dave McKenna, the longtime head coach of Gonzaga Prep’s Bullpups.
More Than Wins: The Coach’s Philosophy
Over three and a half decades at the helm, McKenna compiled a 136‑37 record, guiding the Bullpups to eight league championships and a State 4A title in 2015. His teams were consistently ranked among the state’s elite, earning him six Greater South League Coach of the Year awards and the state coach honor after the championship season.
Beyond the trophies, McKenna’s approach has centered on relationships. He often says that his job is not just to produce athletes but to shape young men and women into responsible adults. That philosophy has resonated with nearly 1,000 players who have suited up for G‑Prep, many of whom have continued their careers at the collegiate level and a handful who have reached the NFL.
Colleagues and former players alike credit McKenna with creating a culture that values character as much as competence. “He taught us how to lead off the field,” says former quarterback Nate Graham, now a sophomore at a Division I program. “His impact stretches far beyond the gridiron.”
The induction ceremony will also highlight the broader influence of the Washington State Football Coaches Association, an organization that has long honored the state’s coaching excellence. With Gonzaga Prep’s deep roots in Spokane and its partnership with the community, McKenna’s inclusion reflects a shared commitment to mentorship, education, and the sport’s future.
