The University of Minnesota's women's soccer program has been buzzing about its 2026 preseason recognition, with three standout student‑athletes earning spots on the Big Ten's Players to Watch list. Among them, forward Caroline Birdsell stands out not only for her offensive firepower but also for her academic excellence.
Birdsell, who tallied 10 points in the previous season, led the team in total shots with 48 and ranked second in shots on goal at 21. Her clutch performances included a decisive goal in the 83rd minute against USC, as well as game‑winning strikes versus BYU, Nebraska and No. 17 Washington. Midfielder Taylor Heimerl brings experience and reliability to the midfield, having started 16 of 17 matches in 2025 and logged over 1,400 minutes on the pitch. Her defensive contributions included six shots, four on target, and an assist on the game‑winning goal against Brown. Like Birdsell, Heimerl was recognized with Academic All‑Big Ten honors for her performance both on the field and in the classroom.
Between the goalposts, goalkeeper Sarah Martin proved indispensable. She started every match, played every minute in net, and posted five clean sheets. Martin's standout moment came when she made a career‑high 12 saves against No. 9 UCLA, earning Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Week on Oct. 13. Her 92 total saves placed her second in the Big Ten and 17th nationally, while she also garnered CSC Academic All‑District recognition and the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.
