Gotham FC eyes Queens as its new home base
After a decade in New Jersey, Gotham FC announced plans to move its operations to Queens, bringing the women’s professional soccer franchise into the heart of New York City’s vibrant borough.
The club will play its home matches at a brand‑new, soccer‑specific stadium slated to open in 2028 at Etihad Park in Willets Point, the same venue where New York City FC will compete in Major League Soccer.
Gotham FC currently sits seventh in the National Women’s Soccer League with a 6‑3‑3 record, and its next fixture will be a high‑profile clash against the Washington Spirit at Citi Field on July 15, an event dubbed “The Queens Classic.”
The relocation echoes the earlier move of the New Jersey Nets to Brooklyn in 2012, signaling a broader shift of major sports franchises toward New York’s urban core.
Stadium ambitions and community impact
The planned arena is designed to meet FIFA standards, offering 5,000 seats, state‑of‑the‑art training facilities and dedicated fan zones that aim to deepen community ties and promote women’s sports participation across the region.
Club officials say the move will provide greater visibility for the NWSL, attract new sponsors, and give fans a chance to experience live soccer in a setting that blends the borough’s industrial heritage with modern amenities.
