Granville "Sonny" Lyons to be Honored in Tennessee State's 2026 Hall of Fame
Tennessee State University is set to spotlight its 2026 Hall of Fame class in the weeks ahead, building anticipation for the August 27 banquet that will celebrate the athletes, coaches and contributors who have shaped Tiger athletics over the decades.
Among the inductees is Granville "Sonny" Lyons, a standout free safety who anchored the Tigers' defense from 1970 through 1973. Lyons not only started every game during his four‑year tenure but also rewrote the school record books with 19 career interceptions, a mark that still stands.
A Defensive Maestro and National Champion
Lyons earned Associated Press All‑America honors in 1974, a testament to his dominance on the field. During his college years the Tigers captured two national championships and posted two undefeated seasons, achievements that cemented the program’s reputation as a powerhouse in collegiate football.
After graduation, Lyons took his talents to the professional ranks, signing with the Atlanta Falcons before later joining the Minnesota Vikings. Though his NFL stint was brief, it reflected the tenacity and skill that had defined his collegiate career.
A Full‑Circle Return
Lyons eventually returned to his alma mater as a graduate assistant coach for the 1975 and 1976 seasons, passing on his knowledge to the next generation of Tigers. His journey from player to coach underscores a lifelong commitment to the university that shaped him.
The upcoming banquet will not only celebrate Lyons but also the entire 2026 Hall of Fame class, highlighting the enduring impact of those who have contributed to Tennessee State's rich athletic heritage.
