The Village of Greenport is breathing new life into its Third Street basketball courts, turning a modest community project into a vibrant public space that will soon host both sport and art.
A Community‑Driven Revamp
Residents Tod Hart and Collin Ratsey have contributed $25,000 toward the effort, which aims to bring the total investment to $42,570. The funds will cover new nets, backboards, rims, an eight‑foot hoop for youngsters, and surrounding trees that will shade the venue.
Central to the vision is a large‑scale mural that will wrap the court’s perimeter fencing. The Greenport Mural Project is inviting artists to submit bold, digitally rendered designs for the perimeter.
Artists must submit a portfolio, concept sketch, artist statement and brief biography through the project’s online application form by August 10. The selected creator will receive a $1,000 stipend and public recognition, with the artwork reproduced on durable mesh vinyl spanning roughly 100 linear feet.
The initiative builds on earlier successes, such as the sunflower mural painted on the Fifth Street Beach restrooms earlier this summer, showcasing the town’s commitment to public art.
Summer Tournament on the Horizon
On Saturday, July 25, the annual Greenport Summer Basketball Tournament will kick off at 11 a.m., featuring games organized by age group, starting with the youngest participants.
Organizers are seeking donations of bottled water, Gatorade, juice, fruit cups and chips to keep players hydrated and energized throughout the day, and interested contributors can contact dceventsforkids@gmail.com for details.
With the court upgrades and artistic flair set to transform the space, Greenport hopes to foster a stronger sense of community while celebrating both sport and creativity.
