Skidmore College announced this week that former professional goalkeeper Greg Monroe will join the men’s soccer staff as the program’s new goalkeeping coach, bringing a wealth of experience from the collegiate and semi‑professional ranks.
A Fresh Coaching Presence
Monroe’s career includes stints at Siena University, Austin FC II and Hartford Athletic, where he honed his skills as a shot‑stopper and mentor. He will now apply that background to shape the development of Skidmore’s keepers, designing training sessions, preparing match strategies and crafting individualized plans for each player.
Head coach Brad Campion praised the appointment, noting Monroe’s “deep understanding of the position and an infectious enthusiasm that will inspire our athletes.” Campion added that the new coach’s arrival aligns with the program’s ambition to compete at a higher level while maintaining a supportive learning environment.
In his own words, Monroe said he is eager to transition from the pitch to the sidelines, focusing on “the art of coaching goalkeepers at the college level and helping each player reach their full potential.” He highlighted the importance of technical work, mental resilience and tactical awareness in modern soccer.
Honoring the Past, Building the Future
The announcement also served as a tribute to Ryan Henning, who departs after two seasons as an assistant coach. Henning was credited with laying a solid foundation for the goalkeeping unit, establishing routines that have already begun to bear fruit on the field.
Skidmore’s athletic department emphasized that the new coaching duo reflects a broader commitment to elevating the men’s soccer program. By pairing proven playing experience with strategic coaching, the college aims to foster competitive success while nurturing the personal growth of its student‑athletes.
