The program has languished for years, posting a cumulative record that sits well below .500 and enduring a dozen seasons under the radar in Big West play. Budget constraints and a shift of institutional focus toward basketball have compounded the challenge, but new athletic director Greg Paules has signaled a renewed commitment to restoring the program’s former stature.
Wallis brings a résumé that includes a head‑coaching stint at Grand Canyon University and assistant roles at the University of Tennessee, UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton. He has spent recent weeks consulting with former Riverside coaches Jack Smitheran and Doug Smith, absorbing a proven blueprint that emphasized player development and community engagement.
Central to his plan is the identification of underrecruited local players who possess the raw tools to thrive in a high‑performance environment. Riverside’s surrounding area is widely regarded as one of the nation’s premier amateur baseball hotbeds, a reputation reinforced by the recent success of California Baptist University in signing top‑tier prospects.
Wallis also hopes to revive traditions such as the Riverside Baseball Invitational, an event that once galvanized the city’s fan base. By weaving together athletic ambition, academic support and neighborhood pride, he aims to create a sustainable model that can compete not only in the Big West Conference but also on the national stage.
