The Grand Rapids Griffins announced the addition of veteran defenseman Marcus Crawford to a one‑year contract, a move that underscores the club’s intent to reinforce its blue line ahead of the upcoming season.
A Strategic Reinforcement
Crawford arrives after a breakout campaign in which he topped the ECHL with 86 points, comprising 14 goals and 72 assists across 70 games, and was crowned both MVP and Defenseman of the Year.
This will mark his second stint with the Griffins, having previously appeared in eight games during the 2018‑19 season, and he does so under the guidance of head coach Dan Watson, who previously mentored him in Toledo.
The signing comes as the organization finalizes a defensive group that already includes several players under NHL contracts with the Detroit Red Wings, such as Ronnie Attard, Shai Buium, William Lagesson, Anton Johansson, Axel Sandin‑Pellikka and William Wallinder.
Among those, Sandin‑Pellikka can be reassigned without waiver clearance, while Attard, Lagesson and Wallinder must clear NHL waivers, a hurdle that is not expected to prevent their participation.
General manager Justice Christensen highlighted the strategic value of the move, noting that Crawford’s experience and offensive upside will complement the existing mix of talent, including prospects like Alex Kannok Leipert and Jacob Truscott.
The Griffins’ affiliation with the Detroit Red Wings adds another layer of depth, as the Red Wings’ roster features additional blueliners who could see action in Grand Rapids, ensuring a robust pipeline of defensive talent.
