Grizzly Hockey marks 30 years of community impact and future growth

After three decades of ups and downs, the Glenwood Springs Youth Hockey Association is refocusing on youth development and expanding its reach across western Colorado

Grizzly Hockey, the Glenwood Springs Youth Hockey Association, is celebrating its 30th year as a cornerstone of Colorado’s winter sports landscape. The program’s legacy stretches from humble beginnings on makeshift rinks to a well‑established youth hockey powerhouse that draws participants from across the state.

The organization was founded in the early 1990s by Peter Sharpe, whose rallying cry “Wouldn’t Ice be Nice?” captured the spirit of a community eager to bring ice sports to the valley. Sharpe’s grassroots effort eventually secured a permanent home at the Glenwood Springs Ice Rink, laying the foundation for decades of competition and camaraderie.

Over the years, Grizzly Hockey has evolved into a multi‑generational hub, offering competitive play for boys and girls aged 10U through 19U and providing a developmental pipeline that has produced players for higher levels of hockey. Participation has fluctuated, notably during the COVID‑19 pandemic and with the emergence of nearby programs such as the Grand Junction River Hawks and Colorado Extreme, but the association has persisted through those challenges.

A renewed focus on youth development

Today, the organization is fielding teams in every age group within the Western Colorado Hockey League (WCHL), a league that spans from Summit County to Durango and includes divisions for both male and female players. Leadership is placing particular emphasis on strengthening the youngest cohorts, aiming to build a sustainable pipeline that will feed the older divisions and ensure long‑term competitiveness.

Community engagement remains a core pillar of the program. An annual barbecue and gear exchange event will welcome families as registration for the 2026‑27 season opens, reinforcing the club’s mission to blend high‑level competition with a fun, inclusive experience for all ages.
