Gulf Coast State College announced the hiring of Adam Sweeney as its new men’s head basketball coach on May 6, marking a fresh direction for the program.
Athletic director Mike Kandler said the college is excited to bring Sweeney’s proven leadership to the court, citing his deep roots in the region and his track record of player development.
Sweeney’s coaching journey began with a stint at New Mexico Junior College in Hobbs, where he helped shape a competitive junior‑college program before moving on to Gardner‑Webb University in Boiling Springs, North Carolina.
At Gardner‑Webb, he served as an assistant, gaining experience in a Division I environment, and later joined Northwest Florida State College in Niceville as a top assistant, contributing to the team’s recent successes.
A regional pedigree
Having worked across three states, Sweeney blends the tactical acumen honed in the Southwest with the disciplined culture of the Southeast, positioning Gulf Coast State to compete more aggressively in the upcoming season.
Looking ahead
The college hopes the new coach will translate his regional connections into stronger recruiting pipelines and a more dynamic style of play, while the athletic department continues to invest in facilities and support staff.
