Gulf Coast State College Names Adam Sweeney as New Men’s Basketball Coach

Former assistant at Gardner‑Webb and Northwest Florida State steps into lead role, athletic director promises a formal introduction soon.

Gulf Coast State College announced on May 6 that Adam Sweeney will take over as the program’s new men’s basketball head coach, marking a fresh direction for the team.

Sweeney arrives after two seasons as an assistant at Gardner‑Webb University, where he helped the Runnin’ Bulldogs secure a winning campaign, and before that spent a year as the top assistant at Northwest Florida State College in Niceville.

Prior to his time in Niceville, he also contributed as an assistant at New Mexico Junior College in Hobbs, New Mexico, gaining experience across different levels of collegiate competition.

Mike Kandler, Gulf Coast State’s athletic director, said he is excited to welcome Sweeney and believes the coach’s background will translate into immediate on‑court progress.

Kandler added that a formal press conference will be scheduled in the coming weeks to introduce Sweeney to the campus community and the broader basketball audience.

A Strategic Vision for the Future

Sweeney’s approach emphasizes player development, disciplined defense and a fast‑paced offense, elements that align with the college’s broader athletic goals.

Fans and alumni have responded positively to the news, expressing optimism that the new leadership will bring renewed energy to home games and community engagement.
