Gulf Coast Women’s Basketball Hosts Summer Camp for Young Girls

Coach Rory Kuhn's fifth‑year camp blends skill work, scrimmages and mentorship in Panama City

A Summer of Growth on the Court

The Gulf Coast women’s basketball program is opening its doors to the next generation of players with a girls basketball camp that will run until Tuesday evening for children aged 7 to 12.

Head coach Rory Kuhn, now in his fifth year of directing the camp, emphasizes a blend of skill development, competitive scrimmages and pure fun, creating an environment where youngsters can both learn and enjoy the game.

Kuhn explains that the camp’s core mission is to teach fundamental techniques while fostering a love for basketball that extends beyond the court, encouraging participants to treat teammates with respect and to savor every moment of summer play.

Current Commodores and former players serve as coaches and mentors, giving campers the rare opportunity to watch college‑level games, interact with student‑athletes and see a clear pathway from high school competition to collegiate play and even coaching careers.

The program highlights the importance of role models, noting that seeing successful players and coaches in action can spark aspirations to follow similar trajectories, whether on the court or on the sidelines.

Beyond skill drills, the camp incorporates teamwork exercises and fun activities designed to build confidence and camaraderie among the participants.

Coach Kuhn repeatedly stresses that the ultimate goal is for each camper to leave with improved abilities, new friendships and a lasting enthusiasm for the sport.

Girls who missed the earlier sessions still have a chance to join on Tuesday at 1:00 PM at Billy Harrison Fieldhouse, where the camp will continue to welcome newcomers.
