The University of Nebraska at Kearney announced today that Gustavo “Gus” Gutierrez will serve as the new assistant coach for the Lopers' women's soccer program, taking on responsibilities that include goalkeeping development and player recruitment.
A Strategic Addition to the Coaching Staff
Gutierrez comes to Kearney after a productive period at Austin Peay State, where he helped the team record five shutouts and limited opponents to a single goal in several matches during the 2025 season. His earlier experience at Mercyhurst included guiding the squad to 13 clean sheets in 2023.
Head coach Rob Breton praised the hire, emphasizing Gutierrez's blend of Division I and II coaching experience and his proven ability to identify talent that can elevate the program.
The Lopers' first exhibition of the 2026 campaign is scheduled for August 16 against Northeastern J.C., offering fans an early glimpse of the new coaching duo in action.
Beyond his collegiate roles, Gutierrez previously coached youth players for Kings Hammer FC in Cincinnati, broadening his tactical perspective and community connections.
Gutierrez holds a bachelor's degree in health and wellness from Mount Saint Joseph University and a master's in organizational leadership from Mercyhurst, reflecting a commitment to holistic player development.
