New leadership takes the field at Hamilton High
Hamilton High School has named Curtus Moak as its new head baseball coach and Derek Thomas as the lead softball coach, marking a strategic shift aimed at revitalizing two programs that have deep roots in the school’s athletic heritage.
Moak, a former state champion player and professional baseball veteran, returns to the campus where he once helped secure a Division I title in 1997, bringing not only technical expertise but also a commitment to community development that aligns with the school’s mission.
Thomas, who has spent 28 years within Hamilton City Schools as both a math teacher and an athletic administrator, steps into the softball role after three and a half decades of service, succeeding Steve Heckman, whose 36‑year tenure produced 474 wins and three state tournament appearances.

The transitions come at a time when the baseball program posted a 10‑16 record in the 2023 season, seeking to reclaim competitiveness within the Greater Miami Conference, while the softball program aims to preserve the infrastructure and culture cultivated by Heckman.
