A New Era for Referee Support
SAY Soccer in Hamilton is gearing up for the fall season by expanding its referee recruitment drive, introducing fresh safeguards to keep officials safe on the field.
Central to the effort is the ‘Go Green’ initiative, which equips younger referees with distinctive green‑colored uniforms and provides a supportive framework that encourages spectators to extend grace when mistakes occur.
Since 2017, attendance at the program’s training clinics has risen sharply, reflecting growing community interest and a broader acceptance of youth officiating, with participants as young as twelve welcomed onto the pitch.
Combatting Abuse and Building Culture
Verbal and physical abuse has historically driven many officials away from soccer, but the new protections aim to reverse that trend by fostering a respectful environment for both seasoned and novice referees.
Doug Wood, a veteran referee, and Chris Harrison, the league’s development coordinator, have been vocal about the importance of mentoring young talent while upholding rigorous behavioral standards.
The organization’s overarching priority remains developing good people alongside competent officials, ensuring that the sport’s integrity is preserved through positive mentorship.
Newly trained referees are slated to officiate a scrimmage in August, marking a concrete step toward integrating the next generation into competitive play.
