A Penalty That Couldn't Dampen Momentum
Denny Hamlin began the Michigan International Speedway event at the rear of the field after NASCAR penalized his team for unapproved adjustments to the car. The setback did little to slow the veteran, who methodically worked his way forward and seized control in the closing stages to claim his second straight series victory.
The race was interrupted by a substantial crash that involved Christopher Bell and Chase Elliott. The incident damaged the SAFER barrier, prompting officials to issue a 20‑minute red flag while crews repaired the damage. Elliott later publicly apologized to Bell for his role in the collision.
When the green flag returned, Erik Jones secured second place, followed by Bubba Wallace, Kyle Larson and Carson Hocevar. Hamlin’s win tied him with Kyle Busch for ninth on NASCAR’s all‑time win list, underscoring the competitiveness of the veteran driver.
The event also highlighted the challenges faced by newcomer Connor Zilisch, who crashed twice early in his debut and ultimately finished last. Despite the setbacks, the race offered plenty of on‑track action and strategic moments for teams across the grid.
Looking Ahead to Pocono
The NASCAR Cup Series will next travel to Pocono Raceway, where the schedule sets the next showdown for June 14. Fans can expect another competitive weekend as the series continues its relentless pace.
