Hardaway Locks Roster as Tigers Gear Up for Challenging Opener

Eligibility questions surround Popović, but the team is set to face Iowa State in Sioux Falls

Memphis head coach Penny Hardaway announced that the Tigers' roster is now set at 15 players, closing the door on any further additions from the 2022 transfer class.

Eligibility Hurdles

Hardaway cited scholarship limits and pending NCAA reviews as the reason the program is not pursuing additional talent, even as the team still awaits word on the eligibility of Serbian big man Nemanja Popović, who joined the squad in July.

Summer workouts ended with 14 eligible bodies, making Popović the sole newcomer, and the coaching staff is banking on his eventual clearance to bolster front‑court depth.

The Tigers will open the 2023‑24 campaign on November 2 against Iowa State at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, a venue chosen to test the team against a strong non‑conference opponent early in the schedule.

Hardaway explained that a demanding non‑conference slate is intended to sharpen the team's résumé and improve its odds of earning an NCAA tournament berth, a goal that has driven the non‑conference schedule.
