Harper Creek’s football program has cemented its place among the league’s elite, securing a playoff berth for the fifth time in six seasons after capturing the Interstate 8 Conference title in back‑to‑back years.
The triumph, however, comes with a steep price. Graduation has stripped the Bees of eight offensive starters and eight defensive stalwarts, leaving just 13 seniors on the roster and forcing a rapid rebuild.
Head coach Mason Converse is already looking ahead, aiming for a third consecutive league championship and emphasizing that leadership will be the cornerstone of the new lineup.
Leadership and Expectations
On the offensive line, junior tackle Sean Johnson returns as an anchor, joined by senior guard Ty Schmidt. The backfield will see familiar faces Nolan Oaks, Gavin Chapman and Landen Sawyer, while the quarterback spot is expected to be manned by Mack King, with additional options from the returning corps.
Defensively, the line retains Johnson’s presence, and linebackers Gavin Rice and Josh Boddy are set to provide experience. A youthful secondary featuring Nolan Oaks, Lucas Leifeld and Isaac Torres will look to build on the previous season’s growth.
The schedule promises tough tests, with city rivals Lakeview and Pennfield on the slate, as well as matchups against state‑ranked Cedar Springs and Grand Rapids Kenowa Hills. Converse says the demanding slate will only sharpen the team for the postseason.
Additional contributors such as Brock Yancer, Logan Converse, Camden Dell, Asher Barlett, Brody Wallace and Broc Tchorzynski are expected to provide depth at various positions.
If the Bees can blend the emerging talent with the few seasoned seniors, the goal is clear: a third straight Interstate 8 title and a deeper playoff run than the three consecutive first‑round exits that have plagued the program.
