A Summer of Growth on the Court
Harpeth High School opened its doors in June for the annual Youth Basketball Camp, welcoming 75 children from the surrounding Kingston Springs, Pegram and Bellevue communities. The week‑long program was designed to introduce youngsters to the fundamentals of the game while fostering a love for sport and teamwork.
Participants ranged in age and skill level, allowing coaches to tailor instruction to beginners and more experienced players alike. The curriculum covered basic techniques, offensive spacing and defensive positioning, all delivered in a friendly, encouraging atmosphere.
High school basketball players served as the primary coaches, offering hands‑on guidance and serving as role models. Their involvement created a direct link between the school’s varsity program and the next generation of athletes.
Lead instructor Lathan Turner stressed the importance of defense, proper spacing and building relationships with each camper. Turner said the goal is to teach the fundamentals while also showing the kids that basketball can be a vehicle for personal growth.
The camp also featured the presence of community figure Mike Wallace, whose participation underscored the broader support network behind the event.
Community Impact
Beyond skill development, the camp aimed to strengthen ties among families from Kingston Springs, Pegram and Bellevue. Parents noted that the experience gave their children confidence and a sense of belonging on the court.
Organizers highlighted the partnership with Harpeth High School, whose official website can be found at harpethhighschool.org, as a key factor in providing resources and facilities for the program.
