Hartford to Celebrate Dan Gaspar with ‘Dan Gaspar Soccer Day’
The city of Hartford will officially designate August 29 as Dan Gaspar Soccer Day, presenting the longtime goalkeeper coach with a ceremonial proclamation just moments before Hartford Athletic takes the field against Birmingham Legion in the USL Championship.
Gaspar, 71, brings a résumé that reads like a world‑tour of football’s elite. He guided Ghana’s goalkeepers through the 2022 World Cup, later serving under Carlos Queiroz with Portugal and Iran at previous tournaments, and spent formative years with the South African national side before stints at Sporting CP, Benfica and Porto in Portugal.
A Global Coaching Journey
In North America he made his mark in Major League Soccer with the MetroStars, now known as the New York Red Bulls, and later in the USL with the Connecticut Wolves. His collegiate career includes leadership at Central Connecticut State University and the University of Hartford, where he shaped the development of future talent.
Beyond club and country, Gaspar has contributed to youth development, coaching Portugal’s under‑15 and under‑16 squads, and his reputation as a mentor to some of the world’s most promising keepers has earned him widespread respect.
Legacy and Upcoming Honors
The ceremony will kick off at 6:50 p.m. Eastern, with the Athletic’s match against Birmingham Legion scheduled to start shortly after 7 p.m. The city’s proclamation not only honors Gaspar’s decades of service but also underscores the impact of his work across continents.
