Harvard University’s men’s ice hockey program announced Tuesday the hiring of John Ronan and Tom Davis as assistant coaches, a move that underscores the team’s ambition to rebuild on recent competitive successes.
A Legacy of Excellence
Ronan arrives after a distinguished tenure at Union College, where he steered the team to a 22‑12‑3 record in 2025‑26, capturing the program’s first 20‑win season since 2018‑19 and orchestrating a power play that generated 34 goals from just eleven skaters. His earlier stint as interim head coach produced a sweep of Princeton in the ECAC Hockey Tournament during the 2021‑22 season, and his playing days at the University of Maine produced 47 points in 132 games, culminating in a senior‑year captaincy.
Davis, a former Princeton Tigers player who logged 97 games and served as assistant captain, brings a blend of on‑ice grit and administrative acumen from his role as Director of Hockey Operations at Princeton. He also coached the Youngstown Phantoms of the USHL, contributing to the club’s 2015 Anderson Cup championship, and later earned an MBA from Providence College.
Program Outlook
Head Coach Rob Rassey highlighted the duo’s combined ECAC pedigree, noting that their expertise in player development and strategic planning will be pivotal as Harvard seeks to sharpen its competitive edge in the upcoming season. The additions are expected to deepen the roster’s technical depth and foster a culture of continuous improvement.
With the new coaching staff in place, Harvard’s program is poised to leverage its rich tradition while embracing fresh ideas. The integration of Ronan’s championship‑winning experience and Davis’s operational insight promises to accelerate the team’s growth trajectory, positioning the Crimson for a strong showing in the ECAC and beyond.
