Hawaii Pacific University is set to make history by becoming the first institution in the state to sponsor women's flag football at the collegiate level, with the program slated to launch this fall and enter competition in the spring of 2027.
The team will compete within the PacWest conference, though the exact number of league schools that will sponsor the sport remains undetermined, adding a layer of uncertainty to the upcoming schedule.
A milestone for women's athletics in Hawaii
The initiative aligns with the NCAA's recent classification of flag football as an 'Emerging Sport', a designation that could eventually lead to a national championship and inclusion in the 2028 Olympic Games.
High schools across the islands have already embraced the sport, with Hawaii adopting flag football as an official high school competition beginning with the 2025 spring season.
Debbie Snell, HPU's Athletic Director, expressed pride in the university's role as a trailblazer, noting that the program may supplement its schedule with matchups against local high school and club teams as well as affiliate members of the PacWest.
While Chaminade University and the University of Hawaii at Hilo have not announced similar plans, the broader movement reflects a growing appetite for the sport throughout the region, signaling a new chapter for women's collegiate athletics in the Pacific.
