Hayley Wickenheiser announced that she will be stepping away from the Toronto Maple Leafs’ front office after eight years of service.
She had joined the organization in August 2018 as assistant director of player development and was promoted to assistant general manager in July 2022, a rise that reflected her deep involvement in shaping the team’s development strategies.
Wickenheiser’s playing résumé includes four Olympic gold medals and seven world championship titles with Canada, as well as a record 168 goals and 211 assists in 276 international games, making her the country’s all‑time leading scorer.
A Stellar Playing Legacy
In a statement released on Tuesday, she said that her expectation of being able to make a substantial impact within the organization differed from the vision outlined by the newly appointed general manager John Chayka.
Chayka, who took over the GM role earlier this year, acknowledged the difficulty of the decision and thanked the employees who were let go, emphasizing the respect he holds for the contributions of those who have served the club.
