Hayley Wickenheiser, a cornerstone of Canadian women’s hockey, has officially ended her eight‑year tenure with the Toronto Maple Leafs, marking the close of a chapter that blended on‑ice legend status with front‑office leadership.
A Legacy of Excellence
During her time in the organization, she helped guide Canada to four Olympic gold medals and seven world championships, while also setting a record as the nation’s all‑time points leader with 168 goals and 211 assists in 276 international games.
Wickenheiser joined the Maple Leafs in August 2018 as assistant director of player development and was promoted to assistant general manager in July 2022, contributing to player evaluation, scouting and strategic planning.
A New Direction
John Chayka, the team’s newly appointed general manager, acknowledged that the decision to part ways was difficult and not a reflection on the dedication of those involved, while emphasizing that the franchise is charting a different path forward.
Wickenheiser expressed gratitude toward the coaches, players and management she worked alongside, wishing the club continued success and leaving the door open for future contributions within the broader hockey community.
