The Hazleton Area Cougars erupted in a 6-2 triumph over Wilkes-Barre Area on Tuesday night, clinching the District 2-4 Class 6A championship and securing a berth in the PIAA tournament.
Power in the First Inning
Dom Marino ignited the offense with a two-run homer that put Hazleton Area ahead early, while Logan Hearity’s four-pitch walk set the stage for a relentless rally.
The Cougars then executed a small‑ball strategy, manufacturing four runs in the second inning through a combination of singles, a stolen base and a passed ball that allowed Hearity to cross the plate.
A subsequent error on a throw let Marino extend the lead, and the team kept the pressure on as the game progressed.
Relief Pitching Holds the Line
Wilkes-Barre Area’s Alex Hufford delivered five innings of brilliant relief, shutting out the Cougars after the early burst, but Hazleton’s middle relievers Freddy Corrado and Jack Esposito stepped up with tight outings, including a flawless sixth inning that sealed the win.
Esposito’s ability to retire the side in order and notch key outs in the sixth proved decisive, while Nathan Fritz and the rest of the bullpen kept the opposition at bay.
Looking Toward the PIAA Tournament
With the championship in hand, Hazleton Area will now travel to face Hempfield on Monday at 4:30 p.m. at Schiavo Field. Coach Russ Canzler is already preparing his roster for the challenge, and teammates such as Teague Stahovic, who hit a two-run single in the fourth to pull Wilkes-Barre within 6-2, will look to contribute.
The Cougars’ lineup also features Mason Rinker, Nick Cunniffe, Anthony Masias, Kolton Davies, Derrick Nah, Tyler Daugherty and Dalton Flowers, all of whom will be key factors as the team heads into the state tournament.
