Heat Wave Forces Early Kickoff
The Salukis' first home game of the 2026 season will be played at 10 a.m. on August 16, a deliberate shift from the usual afternoon slot. Forecasts called for highs in the upper 90s, prompting coaches to move the kickoff to the cooler morning hour.
The match will take place at the Lew Hartzog Track & Field Complex in Carbondale, Illinois, a venue that has hosted the program’s most pivotal moments. This appearance marks the team's opening contest of the new campaign after a 1‑0 defeat in their preseason opener.
Preseason Recognition
The Salukis entered the Missouri Valley Conference preseason poll at fifth place, a reflection of the coaching staff’s confidence. Junior forward Guliana Balistreri earned a spot on the conference’s preseason team, underscoring the squad’s depth.
International Experience Adds Depth
Across the field, Western Illinois fell 3‑0 to Indiana State in its season opener, with goalkeeper Lillian Johns making nine saves despite the loss. The Redhawks will be looking to translate that early setback into a stronger showing.
The roster also features players with international experience. Senior midfielder Dana Nadda recently returned from a camp with Egypt’s national team, while sophomore Michelle Betancourt was selected for the U.S. women's national futsal team’s July training session. Their exposure to different styles of play could prove decisive.
With the heat mitigated and a blend of seasoned veterans and emerging talent, the Salukis hope to translate early momentum into a competitive season in the Missouri Valley Conference.
