On August 8, a crowded field of twelve girls soccer squads gathered for a preview showcase that served as a warm‑up for the season. The event, organized under the auspices of the Central District Soccer Coaches Association, gave each program a chance to display its emerging talent and to test early chemistry before the first official matches.
The Heath Bulldogs entered the scrimmage with a roster of sixteen players, seven of whom were newcomers and none of whom were seniors. Coach Matthew Offers emphasized skill development and teamwork, and his squad struck first, finding the net after just five minutes. Despite the early lead, the Bulldogs fell 3‑1 to West Muskingum, a result that assistant coach Kelly Bryan praised for reflecting the team’s collective effort.
Goalkeeper Ayvah Evans made several key saves that kept Heath in contention, while junior forward Laityn Dennison highlighted the excitement of scoring and the importance of the goal in building confidence. Both players spoke about the value of the day’s camaraderie, noting that time spent with teammates forged new connections.
Licking Valley, guided by second‑year coach Anthony Wedemeyer, presented a different profile: six seniors, ten freshmen and a small group of sophomores and juniors. The team, which captured a middle‑school championship the previous year, faced the heat and the challenge of integrating fresh talent. Freshmen Brinley Zimmerman and Claire Long contributed to the effort, and the squad’s coach described the preview as a stepping stone toward gradual improvement.
Beyond individual teams, the showcase offered a rare opportunity for coaches to exchange game film and for players to meet peers from across Central Ohio. The event’s scale made it the largest girls soccer gathering in the region this year, and participants left with a clearer sense of where their programs stand as they head into the first competitive fixtures.
Upcoming Schedule
Looking ahead, Heath’s next test will be a scrimmage against New Lexington on August 13, followed by a season opener against Morgan on August 15. Licking Valley’s first league contests are slated for August 19, when Granville meets Mount Vernon, and on August 20, when Valley takes on Lakewood.
