Henry Matthias has been named the Gainesville Sun’s Big School Boys Basketball Player of the Year, capping a breakout season that saw him lead the Newberry Panthers to the region final. The award recognizes not only his 17 points per game but also the dramatic turnaround of a program that had gone undefeated the previous year.
Milestones on the court
The Panthers, despite a tougher schedule, fought their way through the bracket, beating South Walton and the Episcopal School of Jacksonville to reach the region final. Their journey underscores the resilience of a team that still carries the momentum of a perfect regular season.
Matthias’s statistical leap was equally striking. He more than doubled his scoring from the prior season, draining 85 three‑pointers that placed him third among Class 3A players statewide and 24th in Florida, while his 17‑point average topped the district leaderboard.
All‑Gainesville teams
The All‑Gainesville-area Big School Boys Basketball First Team features Matthias alongside Juwan Scippio, De’Andre Harvey, Jacob Bromirski and AJ Hall, while the Second Team includes Willie Brooks, Shaheed White, Maliki Cobarris, Jaivion Williams and Joseph Hartman.
Coach Pop Williams of Eastside High School was honored as Coach of the Year after steering his squad to a deep postseason run that brought the school within one game of its first Final Four appearance in over a decade, adding another layer of excitement to the local basketball narrative.
