A second‑period onslaught
Hermantown’s boys’ hockey squad erupted for a 9‑3 victory over Mahtomedi in the opening round of the SummerFest Hockey Tournament, a game that highlighted the team’s depth and attacking flair.
At the heart of the onslaught is senior forward Beau Christy, the returning leading scorer who has been vocal about the team’s offensive ambitions heading into the season.
The Hawks lit the lamp six times in the middle frame, a burst that forced a running clock in the third period and left opponents scrambling to keep pace.
Coach Pat Andrews praised the squad’s work ethic and maturity, noting that the top four scorers from last year — including Christy, Micklain Martalock, Kole Lendzyk and Paxson Madill — are poised to repeat their offensive output.
Defensively, the team’s blue line and goaltending are expected to generate quick transition chances, even as the crease sees a shift after the graduation of Bryce Francisco. Andrews expressed confidence in both Liam Sundell and Carter Nash to fill the net‑minder role.
The experience of a semifinal loss last season has become a rallying point, fueling the Hawks’ resolve to advance to the state tournament and contend for the title.
