Underdog Triumph
The Herricks Highlanders, in only their third year as a program, seized the Nassau County Class A flag football championship, turning a modest start into a historic triumph.
A 21-0 victory over Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK, a squad that had claimed three straight county titles, highlighted the team’s defensive dominance and offensive efficiency.
Senior Lia Bono led the defense with two interceptions and contributed a receiving touchdown, while quarterback Regan Cottrell engineered the attack, finding Hannah O’Brien for a 7-yard score and adding a 2-yard rushing touchdown.
A New Chapter
Coach Tom Graef praised the squad’s unwavering belief in one another, noting that the chant “Whose house? Our house!” resonated as the players hoisted the county plaque.
The Highlanders now await the winner of the Half Hollow Hills versus Sachem East matchup, a contest that will determine their opponent in the Long Island Class A championship game.
Community support has surged, with alumni, parents and local officials rallying behind the team, underscoring the growing prominence of flag football in the region.
The milestone also reflects the collaborative environment fostered by Herricks High School and its partners, including Long Island University, which has highlighted the program’s development pathways.
