The Hickory High School girls soccer team etched a landmark achievement this spring, capturing the NCHSAA 5A State Championship with a decisive 2-0 victory over Dixon. The win not only secured the program’s first ever state title but also underscored the team’s dominance throughout a remarkable season.
A Historic Win for the Red Tornadoes
Stephanie Zulueta opened the scoring in the 47th minute, slipping a precise strike past the Dixon goalkeeper to put Hickory ahead. Her goal set the tone for a dominant second half that would see the Red Tornadoes control possession and create numerous chances.
Piper Jillings doubled the lead in the 75th minute, sealing the win and earning the tournament’s Most Valuable Player honor for her overall performance. Jillings’ contribution extended beyond the score sheet, as her vision and work rate anchored the offense.
Val Bravo’s two assists were crucial in orchestrating the attack, while the defensive unit preserved a clean sheet, denying Dixon any response. The shutout highlighted the team’s balance between attack and defense.
The Red Tornadoes concluded the season with a stellar 23-1-1 record, a testament to their consistency and depth throughout the campaign. Their path to the title included a commanding 4-0 triumph over South Point in the Western Regional Final, a victory that propelled them onto the state stage.
