High Point University’s men’s soccer program has etched a new chapter into its record books after being tabbed No. 16 in the 2026 United Soccer Coaches preseason poll. The ranking represents the program’s highest preseason placement ever and underscores a sustained climb that began just a few seasons ago.
The Panthers have not only broken into the national conversation but have also maintained a presence in the United Soccer Coaches poll for 18 consecutive weeks since 2024. Their journey includes a historic 2025 campaign in which they posted a 14‑2‑4 record, captured the Big South regular‑season and tournament titles, and secured a 3‑2 victory over West Virginia in the NCAA Tournament.
Coach Zach Haines’ Leadership
Under the guidance of Head Coach Zach Haines, the Panthers have realized a vision that few believed possible. Haines, the only coach in HPU history to lead six MLS SuperDraft picks, has overseen a stretch in which the team has ranked in seven of eight seasons, including a No. 5 finish in 2025. The program’s growth is reflected in its perfect 9‑0 conference run, a goal differential of +29, and a series of upsets over top‑ranked opponents such as Pittsburgh, Maryland and Georgetown.

The 2026 MLS SuperDraft further amplified the Panthers’ momentum, producing three selections: Daniel Lugo in the first round, Jefferson Amaya in the second round, and Koven Johnson in the third round. Lugo’s achievement was historic, as he became the first Big South player to earn Male Athlete of the Year honors, while Amaya joined an exclusive list as the nation’s only four‑time major award winner during Haines’ tenure.
