The first weekend of the 2027 and 2028 high school football season unfolded with a cascade of storylines, as five-star prospects made their much-anticipated debuts and teams tested early-season ambitions.
Opening Week Highlights
David Gabriel Georges, a Tennessee commit, turned heads with a spectacular display: he scored three fourth-quarter touchdowns and amassed 250 all-purpose yards in Baylor’s 38-20 victory over Brentwood Academy.
The spotlight, however, was not limited to a single star. Monshun Sales, an Indiana receiver commit, managed only two catches for 12 yards as Lawrence North fell 48-25 to Brownsburg, while Donte Wright, a Miami cornerback commit, anchored Long Beach Poly in a 24-7 shutout of Downey, restricting opponents to just 60 passing yards.
Other standout moments included A’Mir Sears catching two passes for 50 yards and a touchdown in Columbus’s 35-7 win over Southridge, and Nick Lennear’s one-handed touchdown grab that helped Carol City dominate Mainland 38-3.
Defensive highlights emerged as well: Joshua Dobson intercepted a pass in Hough’s 15-10 triumph over Northwestern, and Rashad Streets, an Oregon edge commit, helped Millbrook secure a 34-12 win over Apex. Meanwhile, Kamarui Dorsey, a Texas A&M safety commit, experienced a rare setback as Hampton’s Hornets were blanked 40-0 by Troup County.
The opening slate also featured dominant performances from Brysen Wright, the top-ranked 2028 prospect, who tallied three receptions for 81 yards and a score in Mandarin’s 34-0 victory over McArthur, and Kellan Hall, a Christian Academy of Louisville defensive commit, who shut out Pikeville 41-0. Prince Che, a Georgia defensive commit, led Thomas County Central’s defense in a 57-21 win over Colquitt County, while Jermaine Cobbins, another Tennessee commit, piled up 145 receiving yards and an 80-yard touchdown in Springfield’s 35-7 win over Rossview.
Overall, the early results suggest a season where elite talent can shine brightly, but also where teams must quickly adapt to unexpected challenges, setting the stage for a competitive and unpredictable year ahead.
