Hundreds of High School Players Converge for Fellowship of Christian Athletics Challenge
Hundreds of high school football players gathered at Burlington Memorial Stadium for the annual Fellowship of Christian Athletics 7‑on‑7 and linemen challenge, an event that blends skill development with community camaraderie. Organized by Williams alum Alex Mebane, the showcase attracted twelve schools from across the region, drawing attention from coaches, players and local fans alike.
Eastern Alamance stood out in the linemen competition, showcasing raw power and technique that left onlookers impressed. Other participating programs — including Bartlett Yancey, Chatham Central, East Chapel Hill, Eastern Randolph, Seaforth and Western Guilford — brought their own strengths to the field, creating a diverse array of matchups in the 7‑on‑7 passing drills.
A Familiar Face Returns to the Sidelines
Terrance Alford, a former standout now serving on the coaching staff at Western Alamance, was among the notable attendees. Alford, who previously acted as interim coach at Cummings, remains involved with the school in a capacity related to in‑school suspension while also joining new Western coach Drew Hambright’s staff. His presence underscored the event’s role as a networking hub for emerging talent and coaching minds.
The gathering also featured a brief scuffle between members of the Southeast and Seaforth squads, hinting at the competitive edge that can surface when young athletes push their limits. Despite the tension, the overall atmosphere remained one of mutual respect and shared purpose.
With the high school football season slated to begin on August 21, most teams are already conducting intensive workouts, some up to four times per week. Official practices are set to start on July 29, giving players a narrow window to refine their skills before the first games.
Looking Ahead
The Fellowship of Christian Athletics event serves as a bellwether for the upcoming campaign, highlighting both the depth of talent in Alamance County and the growing collaboration among coaches and schools. As the season approaches, the performances witnessed at Burlington Memorial Stadium will likely influence preseason rankings and expectations across the state.
