Knight’s Landmark Deal
Hilary Knight, a five‑time U.S. Olympian and one of women’s hockey’s biggest stars, has signed a one‑year contract with the PWHL’s expansion team in Las Vegas. The agreement is part of a sign‑and‑trade arrangement that will eventually see Knight join the league’s Detroit expansion franchise.
Knight’s move comes after a standout season in which she captained the U.S. team to a gold medal at the Milan Cortina Games and finished the previous campaign with five goals and 14 points in 22 games for Seattle. Her reputation as a trailblazer for the sport has made her a cornerstone for the league’s growth.
Under the contract, Knight will earn at least $100,000 next season, reflecting the PWHL’s foundational salary structure. The deal also includes a provision that Las Vegas will acquire Detroit’s first‑round draft pick once the league’s trade freeze lifts on June 16.
PWHL Detroit general manager Manon Rheaume praised Knight’s accomplishments, highlighting her impact both on and off the ice. Meanwhile, Las Vegas GM Dominique DiDia expressed confidence in her team‑building strategy, emphasizing that the acquisition aligns with the franchise’s long‑term vision.
The expansion process continues with Phase 3, which opens the door for new teams to sign up to three players on expiring contracts. The upcoming draft class features five Olympic gold‑medal‑winning U.S. national team members, underscoring the depth of talent the league is attracting.
Knight, who previously played for Boston and Seattle in the PWHL, joins a growing roster that includes other notable signings. Six players had declined expansion offers during Phase 2 and must now sign with a team by Friday, setting the stage for a competitive roster build.
