A sudden blaze erupted Tuesday evening at an apartment complex in Midvale, Utah, sending a plume of thick smoke into the night sky and forcing hundreds of residents, including Kaleigh McKean, to flee their homes in a hurried evacuation.
McKean initially dismissed the alarm as a routine test, only to realize the building was engulfed in flames, prompting a frantic scramble to gather belongings and seek safety.
Not far from the inferno, the Hillcrest High School football squad was completing a practice session when the orange haze caught their attention, drawing the players' eyes toward the distant glow.

Head coach Robby Kaelin quickly rallied the players, directing them to a makeshift shelter that had been erected at Fort Union Middle School in nearby Sandy, and more than half of the team volunteered for several hours, handing out water, sorting donations, and offering a steady presence to families who had lost everything.
The shelter, which began at Hillcrest High before relocating to Fort Union Middle School, is being coordinated by the Red Cross, whose website is redcross.org, providing logistical support and additional resources to displaced residents.
