Hillside Connection, a community‑driven organization, has teamed up with Colorado Springs School District 11 to launch a free competitive basketball league that now serves more than 100 students across eight elementary schools. The program, in its second year, eliminates cost barriers by providing practices, certified officials, trained coaches, uniforms and sponsorship support.
Beyond the game, the league emphasizes confidence, relationship‑building and community engagement. Participants, many of whom are experiencing organized sports for the first time, learn communication skills, friendship and resilience that extend far beyond the court.
Founder’s Vision
Terrell Brown, the founder of Hillside Connection, grew up in southeast Colorado Springs and credits mentors and community leaders for making sports accessible. He views basketball as a tool for personal growth and community connection, aiming to inspire students to use sport as a catalyst for resilience and self‑esteem regardless of circumstance.
The initiative has expanded from five schools in its inaugural year to eight schools this season, reflecting growing demand and support. Brown hopes the program will continue to empower youth, encouraging them to engage with their community through the shared language of sport.
