Historic Hampden Park Granted Protected Status

Scotland's first international football stadium receives heritage designation

A historic site saved

The original Hampden Park, built on Kingsley Avenue in Glasgow, is celebrated as the world’s first international football stadium, having hosted international matches and Scottish Cup finals between 1873 and 1883.

Historic Environment Scotland has now granted the site scheduled‑monument status, a move that protects it from a proposed redevelopment after the nearby bowling club vacated the land.

Archaeological work carried out in 2021 uncovered the remains of the ground, revealing early innovations such as grandstands, turnstiles and the introduction of season tickets that set a template for modern venues.

Dara Parsons, head of designations at HES, said the site occupies a pivotal place in Scotland’s football heritage and that the recent public consultation reflected strong community support for its preservation.

The designation not only secures the physical remains but also acknowledges the stadium’s broader impact on the evolution of organized sport and the neighborhoods that have grown around it.
