Hobart and William Smith Colleges Endow Coach Position in Honor of Thomas and Mary Jane Poole

Endowment celebrates Mark Taylor's legacy and future of hockey program

Hobart and William Smith Colleges announced that its head hockey coach position will bear the name of Thomas and Mary Jane Poole, a tribute made possible by an endowed gift that also honors longtime coach Mark Taylor.

A Legacy Recognized

Taylor assumed leadership of the program in 2000 and has since compiled a record that includes three consecutive Division III national championships from 2023 through 2025, a silver medal at the World University Games, and three national coach of the year awards.

The Statesmen set a program record with 30 victories in the 2025‑26 season, underscoring the sustained excellence under Taylor’s guidance.

Thomas Poole, a board member for more than three decades and a 2002 inductee into the Hobart Statesmen Hall of Fame, said the endowment reflects a deep connection to the college’s athletic heritage.

Looking Ahead

The endowed chair is intended to attract top talent and provide resources that will keep the program competitive as it continues to build on its recent successes.
