Hockey Canada Extends Suspensions of 2018 World Junior Players Amid Assault Acquittal

Appeal board upholds long bans for Cal Foote, Carter Hart, Dillon Dube and Michael McLeod while Alex Formenton is reinstated

The fallout from the 2018 World Junior hockey scandal continues to reverberate across Canadian sport, with an independent appeal board confirming the lengthy suspensions of four players even after they were cleared of sexual assault charges.

Appeal Board Defends Suspensions

The board ruled that the athletes breached Hockey Canada’s code of conduct through a series of hazing and bullying incidents that undermined team integrity, and it upheld suspensions that extend well into the next decade.

Alex Formenton emerged as the sole player granted immediate reinstatement, allowing him to participate in Hockey Canada‑sanctioned activities without restriction.

Cal Foote, Carter Hart, Dillon Dube and Michael McLeod will remain ineligible for competition until November 10, 2027, 2027, 2028 and 2030 respectively, with their bans scheduled to conclude on that date.

The NHL has stated that the quartet may re‑enter league play on December 1, 2026, provided their Hockey Canada suspensions have expired.

Hockey Canada’s appeal panel stressed that violations of its code of conduct, including hazing and bullying, merit the extended penalties, irrespective of the criminal court’s acquittal.

The decision underscores the organization’s commitment to enforcing behavioral standards within its junior programs, a stance that could influence future disciplinary approaches across Canadian hockey.
