The Hockey Diversity Alliance is set to host its fourth annual SummerFest this weekend in Toronto, turning the city into a vibrant hub of sport, music and community activism.
Alongside the on‑ice action, the event will feature performances by Canadian track star Andre De Grasse and tennis prodigy Bianca Andreescu, who are slated to attend the fundraising gala and interact with fans.
Celebrity Athletes Bring Star Power to the Ice
Former NFL running back Marshawn Lynch will headline the festivities, joining a celebrity ball‑hockey showdown and leading a football clinic for young participants. His involvement follows a similar appearance at the HDA’s WinterFest two years ago, underscoring his ongoing commitment to the cause.
A Mission Rooted in Inclusion
Founded in 2020 by former NHL player Akim Aliu and other people of colour, the Hockey Diversity Alliance has invested roughly $1.1 million each year to dismantle racism in hockey and open pathways for under‑represented youth. The organization now operates in multiple North American cities, having reached more than 2,000 lives through mentorship, equipment drives and grassroots programs.
SummerFest’s program blends competition with culture, offering live performances, carnival attractions and a gala that draws sponsors and donors from across the continent. Proceeds fund scholarships, community rink upgrades and educational workshops.
Beyond the weekend’s excitement, the HDA continues to expand its reach, partnering with schools and local clubs to nurture talent and promote diversity on and off the ice.
