Hockey Fights Ovarian Cancer Raises $5,790 in Sault Ste. Marie
The third annual Hockey Fights Ovarian Cancer fundraiser took place in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, drawing together women of all ages for a cause that touches many families.
The event generated $5,790 in donations, pushing the cumulative total raised over the past three years to $12,888, underscoring the growing impact of community‑driven initiatives.
Ashley Barton, whose mother Judy Barton succumbed to ovarian cancer in 2020, founded the fundraiser to honor her mother’s memory and to support Ovarian Cancer Canada’s research agenda.
Barton’s personal connection fuels the event’s mission, turning grief into action and rallying participants around a shared purpose of awareness and fundraising.
Honoring Survivors and Community Partners
The ceremony featured Kathleen Running, an ovarian cancer survivor, who served as the honorary speaker, sharing her journey and encouraging early detection.
Local businesses contributed sponsorships, including Radiance Physiotherapy’s Megan Doyle and Young’s Insurance, reinforcing the event’s regional roots.
All proceeds were directed straight to Ovarian Cancer Canada, supporting research and treatment programs that aim to improve outcomes for patients across the country.
The strong response has sparked ambitions to expand the fundraiser in future editions, leveraging the momentum to reach broader audiences and increase financial support for vital research.
